MDG's at Trinity

HELPING THOSE WHO LIVE ON A DOLLAR A DAY

As Episcopalians, we are called to be God’s hands and feet doing the work needed to make God’s Kingdom a reality in the world. Trinity Cathedral has answered this call by supporting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight international development goals established by the United Nations in 2000. (www.un.org/millenniumgoals) and adopted by The Episcopal Church in 2006. (www.episcopalchurch.org/page/global-justice).

The aim of the MDGs is to encourage development by improving social and economic conditions in the world's poorest countries where people live in extreme poverty (less than $1/day). These goals are:

  1. 1.Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
  2. 2.Achieving universal primary education
  3. 3.Promoting gender equality and empowering women
  4. 4.Reducing child mortality rates
  5. 5.Improving maternal health
  6. 6.Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
  7. 7.Ensuring environmental sustainability
  8. 8.Developing a global partnership for development

Trinity supports the MDG program through the recommended allocation of 0.7% of our annual Cathedral budget to support this work. For 2013, this amount is $4,414.44. Trinity’s MDG committee raises additional money and uses it to further several interlocking goals. We have selected programs with which we have personal knowledge and connections, and to which we can offer an ongoing commitment.

Maison de Naissance is a birthing center in Haiti. By supporting community education and healthcare-worker training, we address goals 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8. www.maisondenaissance.org

Steven Tito Academy (STA) is a primary school in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. www.facebook.com/StevenTitoAcademy Lauren George, a volunteer from Australia writes a blog about the students and invites other young people to respond. http://tzschool.blogspot.com/

Read more at www.conceptsforworlddevelopment.org/?portfolio_ite.

STA is a program run by The Baobab Home, which has helped us sponsor older individual students as they attend high school and college (www.tzkids.org). By supporting a primary school and individual students, we address goals 1, 2, and 3.

Join us and help the world—We meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 11:30 am in the upstairs conference room at Trinity Cathedral. For more information, contact Pam Clark at (602) 595-1328.

Parking challenges

The Cathedral Offices have been informed of the parking challenges you face on Sunday morning.  We are working on securing a consistent parking plan.  In the meantime, here are suggested places to find parking in the neighborhood:

1) Parking Lot kitty-corner from Cathedral.  By weekday, this is a Radio Station lot.  We have permission to use this lot on weekends only.

2) Neighborhood parking - there is street parking available throughout the streets of our neighborhood.  Parking is available along:
- the public park circle, north of the apartments,
- along 2nd Avenue, south of the Cathedral,
- along 1st Street, east of the Cathedral, and
- along Portland St, on the east side of Central.

3) Diocesan offices - there are 10 spaces behind the Diocesan offices, west of the Cathedral.  However, please do not block the Bishops' garage door.

4) Public transportation - Have you considered parking at either end of the Light Rail train system and taking the train to church?   Or, parking at the Park 'n Ride at Central & Camelback or 38th Street & Washington and jumping on a bus or train?  The Light Rail train station and bus stops are just east of the Cathedral grounds.

CLICK HERE to visit ValleyMetro.org for detailed information about Public Transportation.

Thank you for your understanding and help as Trinity Cathedral grows as a downtown urban church.

STATUS REPORT FROM DEAN NOMINATING COMMITTEE
March 27, 2013

We wanted to provide you with the current status of our search for the new Dean of Trinity Cathedral.

On Tuesday, March 26, the Committee met to discuss the candidates and written materials received from each including an initial set of follow up questions. Prior to the meeting Committee members visited the respective candidates’ websites, listened to sermons, and otherwise conducted research. After reviewing available material and
discussing each candidate’s qualifications, the field of applicants was narrowed as we prepare for the next round. Applicants who are not moving forward will be contacted.

The next step in the nominating process is to conduct interviews in early April via Skype or other electronic media using a common set of questions. Following those interviews the field of applicants will be narrowed to two or three finalists who will be brought to Phoenix in May for in-person interviews.

The final decision will be made by the Bishop based on recommendation from the Nominating Committee and Cathedral Chapter. The goal is to call the prospective new Dean by June and have them begin work during the summer.

As always, we welcome any questions or concerns you may have now or as we go
forward.
